The situation in Ukraine has sparked an unprecedented wave of solidarity in the Czech Republic, but also many questions from people who have been affected by the war or have family and friends in Ukraine. Here are the 8 most frequently asked questions on where to turn if you are looking for help or are offering a helping hand to those in need at this time.

1) Asylum in the Czech Republic, how to get across the border

The Ministry of Interior has set up a website has set up a website with information for Ukrainian citizens coming to the Czech Republic.

Currently, citizens of Ukraine are granted temporary protection, which lasts up to 1 year and can be obtained at the Regional Centres for help and Assistance to Ukraine. This visa allows you not only to stay in the country, but also to work and receive medical care. Persons who have already obtained a special long-term visa are automatically transferred to the temporary protection system.

Czech Radio via its streaming internet service allows you to listen to Radio Ukraine, which continuously provides the most up-to-date and accurate information on the situation in Ukraine. CRo also will produce a podcast with practical information for refugees.

ČSOB bank account free of charge and financial aid for Ukrainian citizens

ČSOB Bank offers Ukrainian citizens possibility of opening bank account with several benefits, including financial assistance of CZK 2,500 for a newly opened account. In addition, clients will receive a free payment card for the account within 3 days, and can open one foreign currency (EUR or USD) account with no fees for maintenance and cash deposits.

At the same time, using ČSOB ATMs for withdrawals with Ukrainian cards will be free of charge as well. For opening an account, a Ukrainian passport is sufficient but there is no need to present a residence permit or visa. The account can be opened at all ČSOB branches. People can also use a special hotline in Ukrainian language at 800 200 290 or get information at www.csob.cz/portal/ua.

5) Information for Czech citizens in Ukraine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has urged Czech citizens to leave Ukraine and strongly warns against travel to the country. The Czech Embassy in Kiev and the Consulate General in Lviv have been temporarily closed.

In case of an emergency situation, Czech citizens in Ukraine can contact the emergency line at the Ukrainian number +380673749701 or the Czech number +420 222 264 234.

In this context, the Czech MFA is once again appealing to Czech citizens who are in Ukraine or who have been living in the country for a long time to register in the DROZD system.

If you are already in the country and decide to stay despite the warnings, please take the utmost care during your stay, follow credible media and have an evacuation plan ready in case of emergency. The Czech MFA warns that in areas of military conflict it will have only very limited possibilities to provide assistance and protection to Czech citizens on the territory of Ukraine.

We do not accept material donations as standard, mainly because in the vast majority of cases the transportation to the place is more expensive than the value of the parcel itself.

An up-to-date overview of PIN's activities

West of Ukraine

People in Need's trucks regurarly arrive in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv with much-needed humanitarian aid. We also provide psychological assistance in the region and help to create refugee centres in smaller towns. Trains from the Czech Republic with humanitarian aid arrive in Kiev.

East of Ukraine

We distribute water, food parcels and hygiene items in eastern Ukraine. We provide direct financial assistance to particularly vulnerable families. We are sending trains to Dnipro, from where is the aid distributed to other places. Two of our trucks got to the city of Sumy.

Czech Republic

Social workers assist refugees in almost all regions, we are part of the organizational structures and we participate in the creation of systemic solutions for the integration of incoming Ukrainians. We have established a telephone hotline in Ukrainian language. We financially support helping organizations.

Border States

In Moldova, we have reinforced our existing office and are helping to set up and equip accommodation facilities for Ukrainian refugees in cooperation with local organisations. In Romania, we also financially support local organisations. In Slovakia, in cooperation with Človek v ohrození, we are helping at border crossings I inside the country and with aid coordination in the Ukrainian Transcarpathian region.
